Nakano is conveniently located, being only one stop and five minutes away from Shinjuku station, the biggest station in Japan. It is famous for its reasonably priced restaurants and shops. Once you go through the North exit of the station, you are at the entrance of the Nakano Sun Mall, a huge arcade. At the end of the arcade is Nakano Broadway, a shopping mall popular among “otaku” (enthusiasts of anime and manga), due to its number of stores related to Japanese sub-culture.
Also in the area are numerous izakayas, bars with live music, concert halls, a DIY store and a planetarium. In nearby Araiyakushi shrine garden, on some weekends you can enjoy a flea market selling a variety of antiques and knickknacks.
